Meet La Plata - A Coffee with a Story!

This coffee comes from a group of small-scale farmers in La Plata, Huila, Colombia, where coffee isn’t just a drink – it’s the heart of the community. Named after the region itself, La Plata is known for its rich coffee culture and deep agricultural traditions.

Who Grows La Plata? One of the key producers behind this blend is Fernando García. He moved to Huila from Caquetá, fleeing conflict, and built a thriving farm growing beans, peaches, and coffee. His sons are also involved, and together they produce Bourbon Manzano, a coffee variety known for its round, apple-like cherries.

Fun fact: This variety is called “manzano” because the cherries look like tiny apples!

La Plata is a blend made up of six lots from five different producers, with Fernando García’s family farm making up 60% of the total blend.

What Makes Huila Coffee Special? Huila is part of the Colombian Massif, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve packed with biodiversity and rich volcanic soil. This region provides 70% of Colombia’s freshwater, and coffee here grows between 1,200 - 2,000 meters above sea level, developing complex flavors thanks to cooler temperatures and limited sunlight.

Cool science fact: Coffee in Huila benefits from just 3.5 hours of sunlight per day! This helps it develop more natural sugars, leading to sweeter, more flavorful brews.
